Which birth control pill is best?

There’s no single type of pill that’s considered to be the best of all. Some pills are better for certain people, depending on a variety of factors.

For instance, women who experience migraine with aura should take the progestin-only pill. Those who have had breakthrough bleeding when taking a low-estrogen pill should take one with more estrogen.

Although it seems like there are hundreds of brands of the pill, there are really only about 25 combinations of estrogen and progestin, and the variations among them are slight. For this reason, there aren’t certain pills that are definitively better than others at treating certain conditions (like acne).

That said, a small proportion of women do find benefit in one pill versus another. For these individuals, it’s usually a matter of trial and error in finding the pill that feels best to them.
